Amber Heard gets passionate as she discusses domestic violence in new campaign video

Amber Heard has spoken out to help eliminate violence against women.

The actress, who alleged ex husband Johnny Depp was "verbally and pysically abusive" towards her during their time together, gave a powerful public service announcement for a project with GirlGaze.

"How is this happening to me? I’m strong, smart, I’m not a victim," she says at the start of the two-minute clip, already visibly emotional.

"I guess there was a lot of shame attached to that, the label of 'victim'," she continues.

"It happens to so many women you know. When it happens in your home behind closed doors with someone you love, it’s not straightforward. If a stranger did this it would be a no-brainer.

Amber, 30, then praised the support she received from those closest to her.

"If I hadn't had a few people that I really trust around me, a few women support, a few friends. If I hadn't had them around me, how different my life would be.

"As a women having gone through this in the public stage, in the public arena that I did it in, I have a unique opportunity to remind other women that this doesn't have to be the way it is. You don't have to do it alone. You're not alone, and we can change this."

Amber goes on to say there needs to be something done to stop the negative stigma attached to reporting instances of domestic abuse.

"We need to take responsibility for how we talk about these things. The only way people are going to feel comfortable coming forward, raising their voices and standing up for themselves, is if we change the system in place that keeps them quiet," she said.

Amber rounded off her heart-warming speech by urging women to "speak up", in order to help eliminate violence against women.

"Speak up, speak up. Raise your voice, your voice is the most powerful thing and we, together, as women standing shoulder to shoulder cannot and will not any longer accept silence."

Amber's video was released on Friday to mark International Day for the Elimination of Violence Towards Women.

Amber and Johnny reached a divorce settlement of $7 million after Amber accused Johnny of domestic assault.

The Magic Mike XXL star chose to give all the money to the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles and the American Civil Liberties Union, something which Johnny "deeply respected" her for.
